Layers of energetic color, expressive linework, and joyful movement come together in a bold new collection of abstract expressionist paintings by Bobby Gombert. The upcoming exhibition at Helotes Gallery will feature Gombert’s newest large-scale works, inviting viewers into a world of emotion, intentional spontaneity, and visual storytelling through color, abstraction and illustrative geometric reminisce.

Gombert’s paintings reflect both his professional design background and his deeply personal artistic evolution. Following several life changes years ago, he turned his focus toward abstract art as a way to communicate emotion, hope, faith, and positivity through color and movement. Now exhibiting at the Helotes Gallery in Old Town, located northwest of San Antonio. The gallery is home to the works of many local Hill Country artists, including Gombert. The exhibit features his new paintings from his “Reflections In Paint” introduction collection. Gombert, himself, will be on hand to speak to guests about his inspirations and his work.

Immerse yourself in dynamic fields of blues, greens, reds, whites, and warm earth tones interacting across expansive canvases, creating scenes that feel alive with rhythm and emotion. Gombert’s work is instantly recognizable through layered compositions filled with gestural marks, energetic symbols, sweeping lines, and vibrant contrasts. Influences from his years in illustration and graphic design can be seen in his confident use of composition, visual balance, and color relationships, while the spontaneity of abstract expressionism gives each painting a deeply personal and intuitive quality.

“When I put color down, I want it to express happiness and God’s love,” Gombert explains. “I want things to shine through there that really make a difference. When people look at it, I want it to speak good things to them.”

Rather than offering fixed interpretations, Gombert’s paintings encourage viewers to discover their own meaning within the layers of texture, movement, and color. His immersive works balance chaos and harmony simultaneously, creating an emotional experience that feels uplifting, energetic, and deeply human.

About Bobby Gombert

Bobby Gombert is originally from Boerne, Texas, is now a Texas-based abstract expressionist artist whose decades-long creative career diversely spans illustration, publishing, greeting card design, advertising, marketing and fine art. A graduate of Abilene Christian University with a degree in design, Gombert first established himself through illustration work in both the business and children’s book industries before creating successful greeting card collections for major companies including DaySpring and Oatmeal Studios.

Drawing from decades of experience in visual communication, Gombert’s abstract paintings combine bold color relationships, layered textures, expressive mark-making, and dynamic movement to create emotionally engaging works that reflect joy, faith, and human connection. His paintings are heavily influenced by his many years developing visual narratives in illustration and design. This influence has particularly affected his understanding of composition and the emotional impact of color as he fully transitioned into abstract expressionism.

Today, Gombert’s work continues to evolve through energetic abstract compositions that invite viewers to experience positivity, movement, and personal interpretation through contemporary expressionist art.
